Ontario’s Ministry of Consumer Services
Following up on Jim Carney’s recent appearance on CBC-TV’s Marketplace, Jim and John Levi met with the Director of the Consumer Protection Branch in Ontario’s Ministry of Consumer Services. The Ministry is limited by legislation and regulation in what it can do, but new avenues for enforcement are being explored. A proposal for handling rogue operators is now being formulated and will be presented for approval to CAM’s board of directors on December 5. We believe this is a program that will have application in all Canadian jurisdictions.
FMCSA Moving Fraud Summit
The International Association of Movers participated in the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) second Moving Fraud Summit on November 20. The Summit brought together federal, state, and business stakeholders in an effort to devise ways to better combat the scourge of moving fraud in the U.S. CAM will be observing these developments with the objective of determining how the lessons learned can be applied to the Canadian situation. CAM Succession Planning
The Canadian Association of Movers is currently looking for a new president. John Levi has advised the Association that he will be retiring as President on December 31, 2014. CAM has established a Succession Committee that is in the process of defining the role of president and searching for an individual to fill that role. Currently, the role includes managing the Association in all its aspects – membership, administration, data, publications, government liaison, etc.
Applications should be sent in confidence to admin@mover.net. Applicants wishing to do so, may apply in confidence by having their name and contact information removed from the application prior to its being sent to the Succession Committee.
Logistics Opportunity for a Canadian Mover(s)
A consortium of Canadian furniture manufacturers is looking for a company, or companies, to provide high-quality delivery services for its products (sofas, loveseats, chairs, ottomans and possibly sofa beds). The consortium prides itself on providing quality and value. Initial volumes are estimated at 4,000 units per year. Interested companies should have a Canada-wide capability and be able to provide B2C deliveries as well as white-glove service as required. First deliveries are expected for the end of January 2014. Expressions of interest should be sent ASAP to the Canadian Association of Movers.

The Canadian Association of Movers will be producing a moving-industry events calendar on its website. Our intention is to provide a calendar that shows associations’ events, van lines’ events and other events related to our industry. Relevant events will be posted with the following information:
- date
- company/association
- event name/type
- venue/location
- contact information (as applicable)
Please send us these details on your event and we’ll add them to the calendar.
Highland Moving and Storage Ltd. Celebrates 75th Anniversary
Congratulations to Don Kachur and his team at Highland Moving and Storage Ltd. on their 75 years of providing quality, professional moving services. They started out in 1938 with the purchase of one moving truck and now have over 200 employees and more than 60 Highland trucks. Congratulations on this milestone!
