FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Moving Seniors Safely Week: March 23 – March 29, 2026
Toronto, ON – March 19, 2026 – With Canada’s rapidly growing senior population, more older adults are planning moves to better fit their changing needs, whether downsizing, relocating to be closer to family, or transitioning into retirement or care communities. To support them, the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) and the Canadian Association of Movers (CAM) are once again partnering on Moving Seniors Safely Week (MSSW) from March 22 to 29, 2026.
Recent Canadian Housing Survey data show that older generations are most likely to move to lower their housing costs, address health needs, or be closer to family. But when you have lived in the same home for decades, moving can feel daunting.
“It can be hard to talk about the future when there are so many unknowns,” says Bill VanGorder, CARP’s Chief Advocacy and Education Officer. “Planning ahead for a potential move – thinking about what downsizing might look like, where you might want to live, and how to make the transition easier – allows older Canadians and their families to stay in control and focus on the opportunities that come with a new chapter, rather than just the challenges.”
Throughout MSSW, CARP and CAM will share practical tools, checklists, and expert advice to help seniors and their families plan moves that are safe, organized, and as stress-free as possible. The Moving Seniors Safely program highlights the value of working with certified professional movers who understand the physical, emotional, and logistical complexities of later-life moves and who are committed to higher standards of service. CAM members are vetted professionals who carry appropriate insurance, comply with tax and regulatory requirements, invest in trained personnel and equipment, and are recognized for their strong consumer track records.
“Professional movers play a vital role in helping seniors navigate this transition,” says Nancy Irvine, President of CAM. “Our certified Canadian movers support seniors and their families every step of the way – from careful packing and respectful handling of cherished belongings to setting up the new home so it is safe, functional, and comfortable from day one. By choosing a CAM member, older Canadians can feel confident they are working with a trusted partner who understands their concerns and is committed to a safe, professional moving experience.”
A highlight of Moving Seniors Safely Week 2026 will be a free national Facebook Live webinar on Wednesday, March 25 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern, hosted by CARP and CAM. The interactive session will feature practical tips on preparing for a move, communicating with family members, downsizing and decluttering, and working effectively with certified movers to ensure a smooth transition. Participants will be able to ask questions in real time and will be directed to additional resources and checklists available through CARP and CAM.
