FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Moving Seniors Safely Week: March 24 – March 30, 2025
Toronto, ON - March 21, 2025 – Canada's aging population continues to be a significant demographic trend, with updated statistics showing an even more pronounced "silver tsunami" than previously anticipated. Over the next 20 years, Canada's senior population is now expected to grow by more than 68%, with projections indicating that seniors will make up about 25% of the population by 2043[1][2].
As of 2023, there were approximately 7.6 million people aged 65 and older in Canada, and this number is expected to exceed 11 million by 2043.[2] The rapid growth of the senior population is further highlighted by the 43% increase in centenarians since 2018, with nearly 13,500 Canadians now aged 100 or older.[2]
The Canadian Association of Movers (CAM) and the Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) partnership for Moving Seniors Safely Week (MSSW) remains crucial. This annual event, scheduled for March 24 to March 30, 2025, aims to address the unique challenges seniors face when relocating, including potential scams and the need for specialized moving services.
The "Moving Seniors Safely" program is designed to support seniors through the moving process, addressing unique challenges such as downsizing, decluttering, and avoiding scams. It provides practical tips and resources to help seniors research future living options, communicate effectively with loved ones, and ensure a safe and reliable moving experience.
“It can be hard to talk about the future when there are so many unknowns,” Bill VanGorder, CARP’s Chief Advocacy and Education Officer says. “But it’s important to ask yourself, ‘How can I be best prepared given my particular situation? What would downsizing look like? Would living arrangements change if my partner were to pass away, or someone had a bad fall?’ These aren’t easy considerations or conversations, but they are very important. Being proactive with moving allows you to take charge of the elements within your control given the current crisis in home and community care, long-term care, and senior housing."
Nancy Irvine, President of CAM, notes the success of previous MSSW events in reducing moving scams targeting seniors. “However, seniors must continue to be aware of red flags such as low-ball pricing, a large cash down payment, being unable to determine the company's street address, or the company's refusal to confirm exact shipment information.” Irvine adds that “by partnering with trusted moving companies and service providers, like those at www.mover.net/find-a-mover, seniors can navigate the complexities of moving with confidence, ensuring a stress-free transition to their new home.”
“The Moving Seniors Safely program will continue to provide valuable resources, including a live Q&A webinar on March 26, to help seniors navigate the complexities of moving safely and efficiently. As Canada's population continues to age rapidly, initiatives like Moving Seniors Safely become increasingly important in ensuring the well-being and security of seniors during significant life transitions.
