Consumer Tip Sheet: Tips to Prevent Claims

You want to pack yourself. We get it. But proper packing and preparation will possibly save a claim at the end of the move.

1. Create a designated "don't pack and/or don't move zone" for heirlooms and irreplaceable personal items you'll handle yourself.

2. Use removable color dot labels to identify items you'll be packing and moving on your own.

3. Utilize a dedicated "parts box" to keep remotes, casters, and other small components together and easily accessible.

4. Use sturdy moving company boxes instead of repurposed liquor or grocery boxes for professional packing.

5. Lock up valuables like jewelry, documents, and firearms before the movers arrive to keep them safe and out of sight.

6. Back up computers and hard drives before packing up your technology.

7. Defrost refrigerators and freezers at least 24 hours prior to the move. And leave the doors open to completely dry out.

8. Make arrangements for kids and pets to be cared for offsite during the moving process.

9. Understand that you cannot enter the moving truck for safety reasons.

Ensure your movers take steps to protect the floors, staircases, and bannisters.
